Five hours in the car from Sydney does something to a person. That’s roughly the drive, according to Visit NSW. By the time you hit Gunnedah you don’t want a brochure. You want a bed, a kettle and a door you can park outside. Fair enough. It’s also the worst moment to find out the room is a hike from town, or that the booking can’t be moved.

To choose a motel in Gunnedah, look at four things: distance from the town centre, the room types on offer, the cancellation terms, and whether dogs and families are welcome. Billabong Motel, for instance, sits about 1.2 km from the centre and lets you cancel up to 2pm the day before.

What a motel in Gunnedah actually gives you

Quick definition, because people mean different things by the word. A motel is a roadside style stay where you park by your room and walk straight in. No lobby, no lift, no waiting for a trolley. Gunnedah suits that. It’s a farming town on the Namoi River in the Liverpool Plains, and most people get there by car.

Two terms you’ll see on booking pages. A family room is a room with three or four beds, built for a group rather than a couple. A dog friendly room is one where the motel allows pets, usually with a few conditions, so ask first.

Dates matter too. Visit NSW lists AgQuip, one of Australia’s biggest agricultural trade shows, and the annual Gunnedah Show among local events. Look up when they run. If your trip is close, book early.

What moves the price and the feel of a stay:

  • How far the room is from the centre and the things you want to see.
  • The beds, from a single king to a family room with four.
  • The basics inside: fridge, microwave, kettle, wifi.
  • Cancellation terms and check in times.
  • Whether the dog can come.

Why where you sleep changes the trip

Stay near the centre and Gunnedah comes to you. Visit Gunnedah’s itinerary page starts the day at the cafés on Conadilly Street. Next stop is a 29 metre sepia mural of poet Dorothea Mackellar on the Maize Mill in Barber Street. Her statue is in Anzac Park, and Visit NSW says her poem My Country grew out of this district.

Drive a little and there’s more. Pensioners Hill is a sunrise lookout, less than five minutes along the Oxley Highway to Lloyd Road, says Visit Gunnedah. Porcupine Lookout, off Apex Road, looks all the way to the Nandewar Ranges, over 100 km off. Lake Keepit is roughly half an hour out, with fishing, boating and gliding.

And koalas. The local population is thriving, according to Visit NSW, and the Visitor Information Centre can tell you where to look. The motel’s attractions page has a few more ideas.

Compare the rooms and rates

Billabong Motel’s rooms page lists the rooms below with “from” rates. Dates and demand move them, so treat this as a guide, not a quote.

Room Beds From rate per night
Double Bed, Dog Friendly 1 bed $150
Queen Bed and Single Bed (twin) 2 beds $160
King Size Bed, Room 2 1 bed $185
Family Room, Room 18 3 beds $210
Family Rooms, Rooms 19 and 20 4 beds $210

Every room comes with a microwave, a fridge freezer, a kettle and tea and coffee, and the motel lists complimentary wifi. A fridge freezer sounds minor. Give it three days into a road trip.

Plan your first night and your first morning

Keep night one simple. Visit NSW names Jack & Jill’s Cafe, Bitter Suite Cafe and Wine Bar, and The Verdict Coffee among the places to eat and drink in town, and the motel’s FAQs say plenty of cafés and pubs are within walking distance. Eat, wander back, leave the car where it is.

Mornings suit sightseeing better. The Country Markets run on the third Saturday of each month, Visit NSW says, so a weekend stay around then gives you something to do before check out. Any other day, drive up to Pensioners Hill for sunrise and be back in time for coffee.

Here for work? Ask for a room near the car park, and test the wifi before you unpack the laptop. Heading to Lake Keepit? Pack a cooler. The room’s fridge freezer becomes your base.

Questions to ask before you book

Check in is when your room is ready, and check out is when you hand it back. The motel’s FAQs give 2pm and 10am, with early check in or late check out possible on request. More for guests is on the guest information page.

Parking next. The site doesn’t spell it out, so ask. Then cancellation terms, which are simply the rules for changing or cancelling a booking. Get the exact cut off in writing. Travelling with a dog? Ask the rules. And because the motel says it’s refreshing and upgrading rooms under new ownership, ask which ones are finished.

The mistake people make most? Booking on price alone. A cheap room that’s far from town, or can’t be changed, tends to cost more by the end of the trip.

Picture a family of four driving up from Sydney after work. They grab the cheapest room online, arrive at 9pm, and find two beds and no fridge for the kids’ milk. (An example only, not a real guest.) A family room would’ve cost a little more and saved the night.

My view: take the room with the fridge and the clear cancellation window over the cheapest one, every time.

FAQ

What is the best way to choose a motel in Gunnedah?

From 2pm in, by 10am out, according to the motel’s FAQs. Ask if you need early check in or late check out, since both may be possible.

Does Billabong Motel allow dogs?

Yes, in one room. It’s listed as dog friendly, a double bed room from $150 a night. The site gives no pet policy, so ask about fees and rules when you book.

About 1.2 km, per the motel’s FAQs. It’s next to Club Gunnedah, which the site calls a short walk from town.
